December 22: An American Airlines Boeing 737-800 ran off the runway at Kingston-Norman Manley International Airport in Jamaica while attempting to land during a rainstorm, reports the Aviation Safety Network.
In the incident the aircraft came to rest on a beach with the main landing gear collapsed, the right engine torn off and severe cracking to the fuselage. The Jamaica Observer reports that 40 passengers from the 148 on board were injured and taken to the Kingston Public Hospital, although none are thought to be in a serious condition.
The aircraft is believed to have been Boeing 737-823 N977A, built in 2001.
